The Space Needle a tall building in Seattle standing 605 feet tall. It has a resteraunt and view point in the very top. It was completed in December 1961 for the World Fair.
The Space Needle has been called the Eiffel Tower of the Pacifc because of its similarities to the Eiffel Tower. They were both built for an international expositions and the Space Needle is now not only a symbol of Seattle but of the entire northwest. Its design is a combination of two ideas. One idea was a balloon tethered to the ground. The sloping legs represent that idea. The other idea was a flying saucer and that is clearly seen in the top of the halo that the restaurnt and observation deck sit in. When the physics of the merged planes were worked out it created the Space Needle we see today. Since Seattle has a fair number of earthquakes the Space Needle has to be dsigned to with stand them. Because of this the designers doubled the 1962 safty specifications. When that was done the center of gravity ended up 5 feet above ground making it extremely stable. Earthquakes are just one thing it needs to endure. It also has to withstand high wind speeds but that is not a problem now seeing that it is buit to with stand speed of up to 200 mph! Even though it can with stand that it will close to the public during storms less fierce as a precaution.
